Since it was announced that Lance Armstrong would sit down Oprah Winfrey to address the doping allegations against him, speculation among the media and the public has been off the charts as to whether the interview with the cyclist would begin his road to redemption. Or not. PR News asked Karen Friedman, who runs media training firm Karen Friedman Enterprises, to monitor and critique Thursday night’s part-one interview with Winfrey on her OWN network (part two will air tonight). Speakers: Do your audience a favor and get over yourself

I was really excited to hear the speaker. She’s a well-known network correspondent whom I’ve watched for years. She’s thought provoking, witty and quickly cuts to the chase. So when I changed my flight to get to the conference in time to hear her speak, imagine my disappointment when she blew it. Actually, I was more disappointed that she had no clue she blew it.

Here she was — a media celebrity in a ballroom of seasoned public relations professionals, but she had not stopped to consider her audience and what they cared about. Yes, she told a few stories about life in the news trenches, but the stories were all about her. How great she was. The obstacles she had to overcome. The tough decisions she makes every day.
