Is it me or does it seem that no one really listens anymore? Case in point. I called my salon this morning to move an appointment. The conversation went something like this:
Me: “Hi. I have a manicure appointment Saturday morning that I’d like to reschedule.”
Reception: “Okay, you want to cancel your appointment Friday?”
Me: “No. I have an appointment Saturday that I want to cancel and reschedule.”
Reception. “Okay, I’ve moved you to the same time on Friday.”
Me: “Let’s start over.”
Reception: “Sorry?”

Power tripping. The urban dictionary defines it as ‘someone, typically at work, who has higher powers over most people they work with’ whose power tends to go to their head causing them to abuse their rights as a boss just because they can.
We all know people like this. Self-important, self-absorbed and self-impressed. They use their power to get what they want at the expense of others and to remind themselves of their greatness.

I don’t take pleasure in firing vendors or anyone for that matter though this may be the exception. ‘Michael’ handled our payroll for years. Every year, I watched our fees go up with no advance notice or explanation so I inquired as to why his rates were outpacing inflation.
I was told it’s because he has the “best payroll staff in the industry” and therefore he increases their pay each year. He went on to say that he was competitive and customers who have left him often came back because other firms “typically screwed things up.” Annoyed, I dashed off a terse email to our CFO saying that’s the kind of thing people say when they don’t have a real reason and then I hit send a bit too quickly.
